Glen Dawson celebrates 100th birthday

Glen Dawson is best known to us at Spotted Dog Press for many things: book dealer, publisher and former owner at Dawson’s books; his commitment to climbing in California and as one of our pioneering rock climbers; but especially for his first ascent of the East Face of Mt. Whitney in 1931 with Norman Clyde, Jules Eichorn, Robert Underhill and Francis Farquhar.

He wrote the introduction to the Spotted Dog Press book, Climbing Mt. Whitney by Peter Croft, noting that when he started climbing the European techniques of using ropes, bolts and pitons in rock were virtually unknown. “If you couldn’t climb it with your boots, it couldn’t be climbed.”

Glen celebrated his 100th birthday in Pasadena on June 2.
