Archie Miyatake was born and raised in Los Angeles, California until his family was interned at Manzanar in 1942. The son of Los Angeles studio photographer and later the official Manzanar camp photographer, Toyo Miyatake, Archie helped his father at his studio at Manzanar throughout the duration of World War II. In his introduction to the book, Archie writes about his family's experience at Manzanar and talks about the time Ansel Adams came to camp to photograph Manzanar.
